Monday 6/7

Arrived, introduced each other. Journals, binders, equipment needed. All notes in journals/composition books. All handouts in binders. Books: The Things they Carried (TTTC), Seagull Reader (SR), Grammatically Correct (GC) (ordered). Anything you don't know goes in the journal; there may or may not be a quiz the next day, and it may or may not be open book.

Picked an object to describe and wrote about it. Discussed subjective and objective description. Used Chaps 1 and 2 of Dickens' Hard Times to discuss ("Facts"!).

After drafting in various ways (obj and subj) went to computer room and laid it down in MS Word. Discussed some of my writing requirements (format and so on).

Tuesday 6/8

Opened with poem: Stevens, "Anecdote of the Jar" (SR)
Reflective writing 30m in back of journal
In-class information quiz (ICQ) 1 plus discussion and grading.
Peer editing discussion and implementation on Description paper drafts
Computer room: final write-up of paper and submission.
Handed out summer reading list in preparation for library visit tomorrow and novel project

Wednesday 6/9

Poem: Duffy, "Originally" (h/o)
30m reflection with poem as starting point
Library visit -- choose novel
New essay topic, "Where I'm From" (see assignments page)
Draft due by 1PM. Opportunity to work on draft at home and present it first thing in the morning.

Thursday 6/10

Poem: Yeats, "The Second Coming" (SR)
30m reflection. Announced plan to turn daily reflections into a written piece -- possibly excerpts chosen by student and reworked.
Read and discussed three "Where I'm From" essays from previous students (discussion of structure, style, mechanics).
Writing in computer room including peer editing (brief discussion of MS Word Reviewing function)
Final paper due 1PM.
HW: Read "Spelling" chapter (GC) -- quiz tomorrow morning.
